For Parents!
Dear Parents:
Throughout the year, I spend time coaching students on study habits, test-taking skills and other tools that can help them focus their time and efforts most effectively in this course. I use the textbook as a base for the class, but much of what we cover during the year comes from outside the text, from lecture, discussion and the students’ own research.
My #1 piece of advice to students who want to succeed in this class (or any other, for that matter) is to invest a small amount of time each day in reading, rewriting notes or otherwise working with the information we are learning. This can include discussing our current topics with you. Twenty or 30 minutes a day is manageable and efficient. Two or three hours spent staring at the book the night before a test isn’t.
When we begin a new unit, I tell the students how long we will spend on the unit and when the test day will be. While I would like to believe that this History class is the most important thing in their lives, in the event that it isn’t, students can plan ahead, budget their study time and not panic if they have another event planned for the night before a test.
I will give students regular printout updates about their current grades that they should share with you. The quickest and easiest way to reach me with your concerns and comments is through e-mail. My address at school is PDEROZIE@greenbay.k12.wi.us
My wish is for a successful school year for us all.

EXTRA CREDIT GUIDELINES
EXTRA CREDIT OPTIONS
General Guidelines for the year
Unless I tell you otherwise, extra credit projects do not include a written report or essay on a topic. The idea here is that you are doing some in-depth learning and research and that you will share this information with the entire class. Essays don’t work very well for that purpose. (Snore.) Generally, if you are going to take on an extra credit or enrichment project, you can choose from one or a combination of these formats:
PowerPoint
Poster
Song
Puppet show
Play
Video-taped performance
Comic book/graphic novel
Dance it in an interpretive fashion
Poem or ode
Truly, the possibilities are endless and creativity is always rewarded.
Please note: you'll need to check with me before you undertake an extra credit project.
