Parent Network Meeting Minutes

April 5, 2012

MISSION STATEMENT: The mission statement of the Edison Parent Network is to support the students, teachers and parents by developing and implementing activities that build community and enrich the learning environment.

Welcome and Introductions:
• President ………………………………………………….. Stephanie Macedo
• Vice President ……………………………………………. Sara Clark
• Secretary …………………………………………………. Jen Metcalf
• Treasurer …………………………………………….…… Mike Holzmann
• Superintendent Parent Rep ……………………………. Tiffany Jennings
Attendance: Stephanie Macedo, Jen Metcalf and Mark Smith

New Business:

• The small group discussed a few recent events. There was very little participation in the bake sale held during spring conferences so we sold out quickly and made $52. It was decided that a bake sale during the fall conferences is a better idea.

• April 27 Family Swim Night: Sara Clark is working on the event. She wondered about paying lifeguards and whether there is money in the budget for that. We will try to find high school kids who will do this as community service hours.

• 8th Grade Party Mr. Smith explained that most details are taken care of by him and staff, but the Parent Network is asked to be responsible for providing activities and food in the cafeteria.

• 2012-13 Planning: We revisited the mission statement of our group as we look to move forward in a slightly different direction for next year. We developed this statement:

The mission of the Edison Parent Network is to support the students, teachers and parents by developing and implementing activities that build community and enrich the learning environment.

We discussed the following things regarding the 2012-2013 Parent Network:

• The Parent Network’s role could be more as a supporting group. To get better participation, there could be a few events that the PN will plan and facilitate (6th Grade party, Teacher Appreciation Lunch/Breakfast, Movie Nights) and instead, the role of the group could be more to participate and add to already planned events (i.e.: 8th Grade Party). Principal Smith could make a request for additional support as needed though out the year or provide opportunities for ways the parent board could “piggy-back” on what’s already going on at school.
• The PN could meet less frequently if we are able to plan further in advance and get parents to commit to helping with a specific event. Ideally we’ll get a few parents to commit already this spring.
• We may not need an Executive Board with the current slate of officers. We can look at reconfiguring the leadership if it will improve participation.
• Meetings could include a topic and guest speakers. This might draw parents to meetings in a different way.
• Parent Network should be visible at the Edison Extravaganza next fall. The ideas of cook-out vs. bake sale should be discussed at the next meeting.
• Discussed the importance of good communication to parents about the Parent Network. Talked about what opportunities new technologies provide. (i.e. Facebook, an all-school email or automated phone message, frequent reminders, etc.)

Next Meeting date is Thursday, May 3rd at 6pm in the Library (LMC).

It will be crucial to get as many parents at the meeting as possible in an effort to develop a good working group for the following year. (Stephanie will finish her term as Pres. at the end of this year) Jen will look at old minutes and contact all who have attended meetings this year and Mr. Smith will also follow up with a personal invitation to the current Parent Network email group.
